| DESCRIPTION: |
Epidemiology is concerned with the gathering and analyzing of scientific information used to develop and direct public health policies for disease detection and prevention. It is also concerned with the areas of chronic disease, injuries, and maternal and child health. Physicians are required to report persons with communicable diseases that may represent a threat to community health. As clusters of illness are determined, epidemiological studies are conducted to identify and confirm the cause of the disease. A Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System is maintained. Analysis and technical evaluations of environmental conditions which may threaten health through exposure to toxic substances are conducted and recommendations are made and actions taken where problems are identified. |
