 NEWBORN SCREENING FOLLOW-UP AND TREATMENT

LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY: M.C.L. 5431; 1978 PA 368; R325.1471 et seq. Michigan Administrative Code.

DESCRIPTION: Laboratory screening of all Michigan newborns is conducted for seven disorders: phenylketonuria (PKU); congenital hypothyroidism; galactosemia; biotinidase deficiency; maple syrup urine disease (MSUD); sickle cell anemia; and, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). Follow-up is provided for all positive or unsatisfactory test results. Three medical management centers provide diagnostic confirmation and treatment.
