DESCRIPTION: The state licenses, and certifies for participation in the federal Medicare and Medicaid programs, the following health facilities and programs: acute care hospitals; hospices; hospice residences; long term care facilities including nursing homes, hospital long term care units and county medical care facilities; psychiatric units in general hospitals; psychiatric hospitals; partial hospitalization psychiatric programs; outpatient surgical facilities; and, laboratories. The state also certifies the following providers as meeting requirements for Federal participation in the Medicare and/or Medicaid programs: home health agencies; end-stage renal disease facilities; and rural health clinics.

Any new construction project of $1,000,000 or more for a health facility or agency including: ambulance; county medical care facilities; freestanding outpatient surgical facilities; health maintenance organizations; homes for the aged; hospitals; nursing homes; hospice; hospice residence or others included by rule promulgation must obtain a construction permit prior to contracting for and initiating the project.

*There are a wide variety of laboratory services certified for reimbursement by Medicare and Medicaid. They vary from a drugstore cholesterol test site to a hospital research laboratory. Those designated Moderate/High in complexity represent what would generally be considered to be a laboratory.
